Haltwhistle, located in Northumberland, is a gem filled with history and natural beauty. From the moment I embarked on my tour, I felt a surge of gratitude, especially towards Fiona Forsythe of the Tyne Valley Railway for her exceptional hospitality. This tour is more than just a musical journey; it’s a celebration of the stunning landscapes that inspire my work.

With Hadrian's Wall and the Sycamore Gap Tree's stump as our backdrop, this journey commenced in a place abundant with stories and melodies. In 2023,when I played at the Sycamore Gap Tree's stump (after beging brutalised and cut by two young adults), I initiated a project designed to weave music with nature.

Discovering Haltwhistle's Rich History

Haltwhistle is not just a town; it is a treasure trove of history. Dubbed the "Centre of Britain," its strategic location has attracted visitors for generations. The remnants of Hadrian's Wall, which stretches nearly 73 miles, tell the tales of Roman legions and ancient trades. Not only is it a historical landmark, but it also serves as a stunning hiking route for nature lovers.

Exploring the wall was both thrilling and enlightening. Walking along those ancient stone pathways, I felt connected to the past. The echoes of history seemed to resonate through the stones. For instance, as I crossed the famous “Roman Milecastles,” I could envision the soldiers who once patrolled these strongholds. This vivid imagery enriches my music, adding layers of emotion and narrative to the compositions I am creating.

The Power of Collaboration

The journey is made even richer with support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. This backing allows artists like myself to connect with communities, explore landscapes, and share stories through music.

Fiona Forsythe's contributions were invaluable in bringing this vision to life. She helped me during my first trip in October 2023, fullfilling my dream to play my "Lament for the Tree": to the Sycamore - felled on the side of the Hadrian's Wall, after being cut during the previous night by two men, with no apparent reasons. Engaging with the Local Community

Haltwhistle's local community is both warm and inviting, playing a crucial role in my musical exploration. Meeting the residents and sharing my vision has been transformative. Each conversation sparked new ideas, insights, and, often, partnerships that extend beyond this project.

I strongly believe that art thrives in community settings. For example, many locals shared personal anecdotes about how Northumberland's stunning landscapes influenced their lives. I am excited to weave these narratives into my music, adding depth and richness to my compositions.

What's Next on the Tour?

As is often the case, the first day serves only as a prologue. There is much more awaiting as I continue this exploration of Scotland's breathtaking landscapes. Each new location promises fresh inspiration, challenges, and deeper connections with both the environment and its people.

You can follow my journey throughout this project on my website. Stay updated through my Instagram and Facebook! I eagerly anticipate sharing more music and experiences inspired by the enchanting landscapes of Scotland.
