During my wandering in the North West, I had the pleasure of visiting the North West Geology Park in Kylesku, driven by a desire to learn more about the region's unique geology and its nomination as a UNESCO Heritage site. The park is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse geological features, and I was eager to uncover the stories behind them.

Upon my arrival to the Rock Stop Cafe, I was fortunate to meet Jim Bunting, a local ranger and educator for the park. Jim greeted me with enthusiasm, eager to share his passion and knowledge. Our conversation began with an overview of the park's geological significance. Jim explained how the area showcases a remarkable variety of rock formations, each telling a story of the Earth’s dynamic history over millions of years. From ancient seabeds to volcanic activity, the layers of rock provide a fascinating glimpse into the past.
One of the highlights of our discussion was the ongoing effort to achieve UNESCO Heritage status for the North West Geology Park. Jim emphasized how this recognition would not only honor the park's geological importance but also help in raising awareness about conservation efforts.
He shared insights into the challenges and opportunities of the area: from the sense of lonliness and forgotten often felt after Brexit to new job opportunities related to tourism and self-sustainability.
His enthusiasm was infectious; it was clear how much he cared about educating others and preserving this incredible landscape. The beauty of the North West is truly breathtaking, and Jim's detailed explanations enriched my understanding of its ecological and geological importance.
If you’re passionate about geology or simply have an appreciation for nature, I highly recommend a visit to the North West Geology Park. Not only will you experience stunning scenery, but you’ll also gain valuable insights from knowledgeable guides like Jim. His expertise and dedication to the park make any visit memorable.
I left the park feeling inspired and eager to learn more andI can’t wait to return in Spring 2025 and continue my exploration of this remarkable region!
